Message says, "missing the following required field(s):" ... when I'm not missing it

I'm having trouble creating a simple custom online customer form. The form saves fine after I include the first few fields. However, when I try to add a comments field, I get the following error:

[LIST]You are missing the following required field(s):[/LIST]

NLCOMMENTS



This seems odd to me because the only time the error happens is when I include the field, not when I omit it. Making this field mandatory does not fix the problem. What can I do to avoid getting this error?
