Why is import CSV records so insanely slow?

Yesterday I imported a 22k csv file. 640 internal ID and 1 field to update. It too over 6 minutes to update a single record for each item. I cannot understand why this shoudl take so long, I would expect this to take milliseconds not minutes. Is there something wrong with indexing in Netsuite that makes this process so slow and are there any plans to address this issue?

I love this product it is so configurable and I can get it to do some really cool stuff, but on the other hand it is so slow. The GUI seems to be stuck in a pot of molasses and the import finction is insanely slow. My productivity is about half of what it could be because of the poor responsiveness of Netsuite, it is great adding new functions but how about some performance enhancements?
