Showing Invoice Date on Credit Memo printout

We have customized a basic PDF layout to show the date of the linked invoice on the credit memo printout. We used a custom element with the formula {createdfrom.trandate}. This works but the issue is that the value is displayed in a date-time format e.g. 23/02/2015 00:00. Has someone encountered this and if yes is there a way around?
