Blank email messages in a transaction's messages tab AND in our email program in-box

Email 1. We sent a message to a customer FROM a sales order.
Email 2. They said our email arrived with a copy of the order and NO message so they emailed back a response and instantly got a bounce with a cryptic message.
Email 3. We got their response even though they got a bounce message; but, it was blank other than a copy of the order... So, we replied back "what is this for".

In the sales order "messages tab" it shows all three emails, BUT all are shown as blank other than a copy of the ORDER.

Anyone seen this before?
