function syntax

Hello all,

I have a custom field that multiplies the weight * quantity to give to weight for each line item. 

{custcolweight}*{Quantity}

If the weight is blank I get this error, "ERROR: Invalid Expression"
the equation is simple, I do not know where to get more information about trapping a null value.

Any ideas?
