Saved Search: Customers who DIDN'T buy a certain type of item

I know, I know another post by me.  Sorry.

I'd like to have a saved search return customers that didn't buy a certain type of product.  I've tried both 'item sub of' and 'class' but when a customers buys this type of item and buys something else, they still show up on the list.

I can't figure out how to exclude customers from the search based on transaction data.

Has anyone else run into this?
