Formula or Search - Item Return Percentage

I'm trying to come up with a way within Netsuite to calculate an item's return percentage based on a given time frame.  I am thinking that I need to count the number of times the item appeared on a Cash Sale and then on a Cash Refund and then do the math.  I'm just not sure how to do this in one saved search or in one custom item field using a formula.  I can create a search easy enough to count the sales and another to count the returns, but I want one saved search that counts both and
