Reporting a customer 1st order - Newbie Needs Help

Hello,
I am trying to set a report / saved search that reports, for a selected period, the value & or Items in a customers first order only.
In both customer and transaction searches I can get to the value or items, but I cant work out how to only show first order, I always end up with all their orders for a period.
Any tips appreciated.
