Saved Search Drill Down Fields : how does this work

I have been using Saved Searches for years now, and I have always asked myself about the meaning of the Drill Downs fields under the Result subtab : today I took the decision to try to understand; I made tests, I checked the Help and SuiteAnswers and I admit that I'm lost here : how does that work ? Is there any real example that I can create to understand ?...
