Formula: When no items on Opportunity contain X

Formula for "no items included X" in item name.
Trying to weed out Opps that include certain items and count them by rep.
I have a formula for does not include but it gives me an error message (ERROR: Field Not Found)if X doesn't exist

INSTR{'SLII'},{custcol_ava_item})

but I'd like to use a 'Case when' formula
Any help would be appreciated!
