Custom joined search example

I'm having a tough time getting my head around how to define a custom, joined search.  I'm looking over the soap examples in the docs and they aren't quite enough for me to get something working.

If anyone has a short example (C# would be great, but anything will do) I would really appreciate it.

[LIST]
[*]I don't understand how we define results (why is internalId an array?)
[*]What the syntax is for specifying joined fields
[*]etc.[/LIST]Stuck...
