SelectCustomFieldRef.value.name = null?

In suite talk, when I'm looping through the custom fields and grabbing values, the value.name property is always blank.  The internal ID of the field selection is stored, but name is null.

All of the SelectCustomFieldRef field types show this behavior.  What am I missing?
