Descriptive names for pictures .. impossible?

We used part numbers for our image names.  I am starting to think that we should have used descriptive names on all of our pictures.  Like brass-widget-rg200.gif and not rg200.jpg.  I want our pictures to be found by the image search feature in Google and yahoo and from what I can tell ...they find matches by image name.

1.  Any way to mass update that information (taking descriptive terms from item name)?

2.  NetSuite puts images in web pages like this...
