Gift Certificate Value set by user

I am trying set up a gift certificate in our webstore. After reading the documentation it seems to me that if I check "variable amount" that the customer can define their desired amount for the gift certificate.

However, upon saving the record and going to the webstore to have a look, the price comes up as "FREE!" and there is nowhere for a customer to enter an amount.

Can anyone see what I'm missing here?
