Problem with DOCTYPE on ie7

Hi everybody,
I am having problems using this document type on a site.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

It seems to work fine on Firefox but not on ie6 and ie7.
If you go to "My Account",  for example, if you click Billing>See All My Transactions, the screen freezes up completely and you have to shut down your browser.
If I get rid of the doctype the "My Account" tabs works fine.

Any idea why this is happening?
