Converting non-matrix items to matrix. Any options other than manually rebuilding??

I know that converting non-matrix to matrix is NOT possible in NetSuite, but has anyone found a way to speed up the process?

NetSuite, are you ever going to make it possible to convert a non-matrix item into a matrix item?  Getting forced to stay with your original item type is too restrictive.  Our vendors change and NetSuite should be flexible enough to accommodate those changes without causing us hundreds of man hours rebuilding items... not to mention the fact that recreating in Matrix will make us loose our sales history on those items.

We have a group of about 250 non-matrix items that ALL need to be converted to matrix items to allow for a new option that our vendor has added.  Can we export and then add a few columns and import?
