We sell matrix items in our web store.  Sometimes there are no active subitems.  In this case, the item appears but with the message: "Price: Free!" underneath it, where the price is normally displayed.  The price isn't free - it's administered correctly on the main item, and all subitems (when active) are the same price - and we certainly don't want to advertise it as such.   I've found on the Store tab where I can select "Don't Show Price," and supply a "No Price Message."  That's helpful, but is an additional step that we have to take for each item
