Issue with implementing fix for duplicate email bug

I've been trying to implement the setup along the lines of that described by mstalker in this thread (many thanks for that btw - you're a star!) to get around the duplicate email registration problem in Netsuite.   I have made a few modifications in order to deal with our setup and now hit a problem I can't see an easy workaround for.  I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this and if so if they could provide a simple fix

Firstly - the things I'm doing differently to mstalker:

1) I'm using jQuery instead of doing the XHR myself.  Can't really imagine that makes much difference and have tried doing the key requests without jQuery just to confirm that wasn't the problem.
