Hiding Subcategory Thumbnails while Showing Subcategories in Left Navigation

Hi All,

Category X has 20 subcategories, and I would like to limit the amount of subcategory thumbnails to 12 , but I don't want to completely hide those subcategories that don't make the cut. I would still like for those extra categories to be available from the left hand navigation. How can I do this?
