Unravelling a report mystery

Reporting... Oh what a headache. Did someone suffering severe dyslexia design them?

A hand if you would...

I need to build a report that shows:

Total number of units sold in a given period from customers that appear only in a group or saved search.

Is this possible? I hope someone can step by step me because I am totally baffled.
