html in templates

Does anyone else have problems when editing templates (fax or e-mail)?  Every time you go in to edit a template (say, you forgot a word, or need to correct a spelling error) it adds extra html tags lines to the template - such as spans, font, paragraph, etc.  If you are like me and are constantly updating the templates wording in an effort to perfect it, the html code gets overwhelming.   Any suggestions?
