freemarker time format

The FM built in time formats are not working in my email template. See: http://freemarker.incubator.apache.org/docs/ref_builtins_date.html

Time is showing down to the second 8:00:00 AM and I just want 8:00 AM. Tried ${openingTime?string.short} and not working!
