Using Auto Generated Numbers

Can anyone provide a brief pro/cons of using the auto generating number feature for both records and transactions? It seems that when using auto gen'd #'s for say, customer records, that there are certain transactions where the dropdown selection list will only display the number range. This is not very intuitive as the user may not know the number but only a name. Appreciate any insights as we are currently setting up our foundation tables. Thanks.
