Expensing promotional items
Does anyone else give away inventory items for promotional/marketing use and if so, how do you track it? Currently, when we want to give away an item, we do a normal order and use a promotion code of "Promo" which discounts the order 100%. The problem I am having is that the sale gets booked as income and then gets discounted in the allocated expense account for the full amount. For example, say the order would be $100 normally but our cost of goods sold is only $10. What is happening is $100 is being booked as sales and income
