For inventory items, are there any benefits for defining an item as a subitem of another item?

I know for matrix items, this relationship is important since changes to the parent item can affect the child one. What benefits are there for defining this for normal items? Are there any visible effects on the website?

I was thinking that maybe there would be some drop-down for an option (that it would be a manual matrix item of sorts) but I wasn't able to see any visible effects.
