Posting Period not scriptable?

Just ran into this while trying to script new Revenue Recognition Schedule recurrence line items. They won't submit without a posting period value, but I'm generating the posting period by date, not ID. Is there really no way to search on the 'accountingperiod' record?

Also, the SuiteScript Records Browser seems to think the posting period sublist field is a text field, but in the UI it appears as a select field. Which is correct?
