what happened with my mass duplicate customer merge?

Every morning I perform the mass duplicate record merge to merge customers who created a new account with their existing account.  Criteria is set at full email duplication.  Since I do this every day, the "last activity" field always shows the current date or the day before.
So, this morning I have 4 like that and 34 duplicates with last activity that was not since the last merge, including some whose last activity was as long ago as 2006.
We did not change criteria.  How did this happen?
