Automatically supersede/replace item on a sales order with a substitute/replacement.

We are converting from one supplier of an item to another supplier.  All of our items are supplier specific.  Is there a way to automatically replace an item that is entered on a sales order with it's replacement?  For example:  If someone enters a ABC 12345 on a sales order, I would like that item to be replaced with the item #XYZ 56789.

There are about 2,000-3,000 of these items.

Any ideas or best practices?
