Automatic Credit Status Mass Check for customers

Is there a way to have a Mass update run on customers - that Automatically checked the Credit Hold Status  (Off / On / Auto) etc and if in the Off position to change it to Auto ?

We thought perhaps a workflow, but we havent been able to get any workflows to work. even after following the online templates.

Any Help ?
