what is "Label" field on address imports that is required?

I'm trying to add data for a new subsidiary - starting with customers and vendors and contacts.

Every import tells me "Label" is a required field? 
What does this field do?
What are the possible values?

Also, I don't understand what the warning message means when I try to map Vendor or Customer address fields.  Something about needing to map all fields if I'm going to map any?  I'm stumped!
