purchase description displays poorly on purchase order

On the user interface for purchase orders the content in the purchase description field lacks line returns, so instead of an easy to read list of product details, one big run-on paragraph is displayed.  We are not using <ul> or <ol> formatting, just a return created using the enter key on our keyboard...but this has never been a problem in the past and the purchase description for the exact same item displays properly in the UI for Inventory Items!   Is  anyone else experiencing this problem?
