nlapiSubmitField not working on inventory items

hi, can anyone shed light on this? i can't get nlapiSubmitField to work on inventory items -

nlapiSubmitField('inventoryitem', id, 'cost', 0.01);
nlapiSubmitField('inventoryitem', id, 'cost', '0.01');

all i get is a null 'cost' field

does an inventoryitem record count as a transaction record, which nlapiSubmitField doesn't yet support? or have i missed something more basic?
