script that send an email alert of new lead or existing customer

Hi,

I'm in need for some help on how to write a script that will email an alert base on a new lead created or updating existing customer occurs.  I know that Online Customer Form provide this option, but I'm looking to find out if I can script this myself because I'm planning on adding a few things to it.  Is there an api I can use to determine this?  Thank you in advance.
