Unit Rate with UOM

I'm trying to retrieve the value of a given transaction line item to get the line item rate with calculated UOM figured in. If I get the field 'rate' from a saved search, it returns the full rate with UOM calculations figured in. Do I actually have to load the record to get the true item rate value or is there anotehr field to source form?
