setting State field in addressbook via nlobjRecord - can't - what's the trick?

I'm at wits end here. I can set an addressbook line item via nlobjRecord (createRecord or loadRecord), yet I cannot set the state field. I've tried setting 'dropdownstate', setting 'displaystate', and of course 'state' and no matter what, when I view the address line everything is set except State.

What in the world is the trick here? I've wasted hours on this.
