nlapiDisableLineItemField in client script

I have some working form-level client scripts.  I tried adding the following line to the PageInit function:

nlapiDisableLineItemField('item','quantity','T');

and it seems to have no effect whatsoever.  It just doesn't do anything.

What could I be doing wrong?  Is there any way I can get more information?
