role permissions for restlet access

I'm trying my hand at RESTlets for the first time and I've run into a problem I have been unable to diagnose.  I started out using the administrator role, but then I switched over to another user who has our "web services" role.  With that change, the response to my test restlet request switched from 500 (Internal Server Error) to 401 (Unauthorized).  I have been through the role configuration tabs several times now, and I'm unable to guess what permission I might need to give this role to let it access the restlet.  Does anyone know what I might be
