Permissions for Customer Record via Customer Center

We have a saved search that returns custom records to a customer in the customer center.  They can then choose to edit any of those records.  On Save I need to grab a few of the updated fields on the custom form and populate them on the main customer record.

I have an onSave script that tries to load / update and save the customer record, however I get an Insufficient Permissions error.

I have looked at the custom record and the user role but see nowhere I can give permissions for the customer record.
 
So this can function from the customer center what do I need to do?
