nlapiSearchRecord - get sublist?

Simple question: how you use nlapiSearchRecord to get the contents of a sublist?
I want to search the cashsale record and get the item sublist. Just using "item" as a search column only gets me an empty string.

Of course I've started wading through the NS help but haven't found the answer yet, so I would appreciate it if someone could at least point me in the right direction.
