noob alert.... totaling cost in Item list.

My apologies if this is too basic but

I am looking to create a script that will total up the Items in the Opportunity into 3 groups Equipment (inventoried and non inventoried), Labor and Contract.

What I need are some sample scripts on how to search the sub list and return the results in the same record.
