What are task links?

Pretty simple question but I can't find anything in the help section besides supported tasklinks.  I'm basically trying to figure out what a script does that a 3rd party made for us.  It looks like it adds a button that takes you to a new customer deposit.  I'm just wondering why tasklinks were used over just a record type of customer deposit.  Are task links the only way to open a new record type in edit mode?  Any articles or clarification would be appreciated.  Thank you.
