nlapiSendEmail error reprting

Does anyone know any way to overcome the absolutely abysmal error reprting in nlapiSendEmail ?  It returns "undefined" and throws exceptions for certain conditions, but frequently throws no exception but yet does exactly nothing.  You can see this for example by sending to a user that is not a netsuite user and it will just drop the message on the floor and not deliver it to anyone even if the other recipients were all NetSuite users.    The fact that it can't send any email to non-netsuite users is not documented, by the way.
