Kill Descriptive URLs?

Now that I understand more about SEO, I've realized that I want to change my URL format to:

"www.mysite.com/product-or-category-name"

instead of

"www.mysite.com/category-name/subcategory-name/product-name"

The way it is now cannot possibly be ideal... having the same page at multiple URLs just seems insane. The problem is that we are just now getting our first pages into "medium" ranking status (on google webmaster tools)... it's a tiny sliver, but it's a start. I don't really want to "reset" my rankings by changing all the URLs, but I feel like it needs to be done now.
