Custom records with child custom records viewable in customer center

I have a parent custom record with linked child custom records that I want to display the parent custom record in the customer center as a link on the my accounts page. I want the child custom records to display on the individual parent custom record when viewed (as it does internally as a linked list).

I can get the parent to display OK and when you view a record I can see the header bar for the linked list of the child records, however no records appear in the list.

I have set permissions in both the parent custom record and the child custom record to be viewing and editing for the customer center roles, but no luck.
