transaction custom field to store unique value across all transaction records, sample; the customers' PO number on a sales order.

I'm surprised that NetSuite doesn't provide a custom field/system option "unique" when creating custom fields.
I was searching here and in the KB and didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm I forced to write a user event SuiteScript (before save) to search all records w/the value and if count > 0 warn/return false?

Anyone done this already? A better way?
