Sorting and custom KPI calculations

Formula columns are great for certain custom KPIs.  However, they do not allow you to drill down into the data.  The main problem is that the sort of the underlying data must be based on one of the grouped columns.  A Summed formula column is a grouped column.  However, this column cannot be set as the sort column. 

Any suggestions?
