Formula between 2 dates

I have a formula on the results tab of a saved search:

Field: Formula Currency
Summary Type: Sum
Formula:  DECODE(TO_CHAR({trandate}, 'YYYY'),'2009',{amount},'')

How do I change the formula to return the values between 2 {trandate}s instead of just 2009?
