Customize Site Search Results to Include Only Items and not Individual Matrix Options

For some reason, when the customers do a search on our site, the results they get are not only the individual items, but also the individual matrix options (mainly color) for each item. This creates a problem because for each item, we have up to 5 matrix options that have to be selected in order to correctly place their order. So, we're getting orders for items with just the color selected and none of the other matrix options. Is there a way that I can exclude the matrix options from the search and just show the individual items? (that includes
