Need help with Customer/Transaction search

I am trying to get a list of customers who have never purchased a particular sub-item.  I have tried a customer search with the standard criteria filter "Items or Sub-items Purchased" is none of x.  I have also tried linking to transaction fields - "Transaction : Item sub of is none of x.  Neither works and I continue to get a list of all customers as a result.  Has anyone else created a search like this?
