Formula Field for Items - Total Purchased

Hi everybody,

I'd like to create a formula field on an item record that displays the total amount ($) of this item purchased to date.

Here's why. 

On our web site, we often have specific campaigns to raise a certain amount of money or purchase a certain number of items.  Right now we update some of the item drill-down pages manually to reflect new donations.  It would be great to see a real-time indication of donations vs. goal.

Any ideas on how to do this?
